Race Report: Los Vegas Marathon 2009

Over the past month I’ve been pretty busy moving into my new place and on various vacations thus I haven’t posted much about any projects I’ve been working on. All settled now though so new posts to come!

This past weekend I ran the 2009 Los Vegas Marathon. It has been exactly one year since I ran my first marathon, the 2008 Los Vegas Marathon. Since then, I’ve run five others, improved a bit, and taken twenty minutes off of my marathon time. This year, I managed to survive my company’s holiday party, the early morning cold leading up to the race and post a pretty solid time.

  • 6th marathon!
  • 3:29:22, new PR marathon time! (1 second faster than SF 2009)
  • 508th / 5852 place
  • 72nd / 416 place, M25-29

For this race I didn’t eat anything during the run (no gel, gu, shot blocks, jelly beans etc.) which was a first. Instead I took the power drink (Cytomax) at every water station to get some sugar in me. I don’t think this would work for everybody but it seemed to work out pretty well for me. I felt very consistently paced throughout the entire race with no cramps or stomach aches.

This was a hard one. I felt great going into the Long Beach Marathon and all through the first half marathon. I ran a 1:35:26 half marathon which is actually faster than my personal record half and a Boston Marathon qualifying pace. This was definitely too fast for me to be running early on in the race, probably 10 seconds faster per mile than I had planned.

I felt great all the way up to mile 16 then I got the worst cramp in my right leg. It was so harsh and surprising that I almost fell when it first happened. My whole leg just tensed up like it had been tased. It was all downhill from there. For the next 10 miles both of my legs were in various states of painful cramping. I wasn’t even horribly tired finishing the race, my legs just wouldn’t move.

Alas, outside of all the problems, it was a fun race with lots of energy from the crowd!

  • 5th marathon!
  • 1:35:26, best half marathon time
  • 3:47:43

So lesson learned, even seconds faster than your planned pace is too fast. Take it nice and slow in the begining and go into the race with a plan. For cramping, a lot of people have suggested a high intake of salt (Gatorade) the week and nights before the race and also taking salt tablets every hour during the race. I’ll try this at my next race, Las Vegas Marathon, December 6th!

disneyhalf

Great times were had at this past weekend’s Disneyland Half Marathon. The course not only took you through both parks with characters cheering you on but also onto the field of Angel’s stadium. My goal was to run the half at a Boston Marathon qualifying pace (7:15 per mile) which I only missed by seconds.

  • 1:35:36 chip time (PR half marathon)
  • Overall: 203rd / 11,643 !!
  • M25-29: 31st / 642 !!

Next up Long Beach marathon October 11th! I’ll be shooting for a 7:30 / mile pace. A Boston qualifyer is starting to feel a tad bit closer.

This was by far the most scenic marathon I’ve run so far. The first part of the race took you down the embarcadero through the pier area. At around mile 6 you went over the foggy golden gate bridge. I got to see the elite runners running back over the bridge on the opposite side… those guys/gals are nuts.

I kept a pretty strong sub 8:00 pace all the way up to mile 20 and then dropped down to a little over an 8:00 min/mile. My goal for the race was to run a 3:30. Towards the end I could see the 3:30 pace leader closing in on me. The last mile was though with him on my heels.

Final time!

3:29:23 (about 8 minutes faster than my previous PR)

395th/4981 overall, 70th/524 M25-29

Still need to shave off 19 minutes for a Boston Marathon qualifier. My next marathon in the Long Beach Marathon on October 11th. It’s really fast and flat so I think I’ll be shooting for a 3:25.

The Brentwood 10k ran through my training grounds, the coral trees of San Vicente. The course did a 5k loop twice which was a little boring but it was fun going through the finish area twice. My stomach was killing me at the beginning of the race (rough weekend) so I’m happy I finished as fast as I did. Next week I’m in serious running mode training up for the San Francisco marathon in 7 weeks.

  • 43:32:10, my new 10K PR
  • 7:01 Min/Mile
  • M25-29: 7th / 34
  • Overall: 75th / 632

LA Marathon, my home town!

I had to pee so bad at the start of the race. At around mile 0.25 I left the pack to pee in a bush with my fellow runners. After the quickest pee in my life, I was back on pace.

During the first half marathon I was going way too fast. I was averaging about a 7:30 min mile. My half marathon time was less than 1 hour and 40 minutes! Wow. Things went downhill from there and at about mile 19 I got comfortable with a 9:00 min per mile pace. It was great seeing all the Angelenos out there supporting the runners. There were quite a few people giving out cut oranges during the last 6 miles, they were a life saver.

blah

My final time was 03:37:35 which is about a minute fast than what I ran at the OC Marathon three weeks prior and is now my new personal record. I came in 70th / 1012 in my age division, 606th / 14128 overall, 10% for the win.
